The Mornington Peninsula’s underwater wilderness rivals Australia’s northern coast for it’s colour, diversity and intriguing marine life. You could meet anything from sea stars to sels and dainty hula fish to dolphins as you snorkel or dive around rocky reefs, seagrass meadows, underwater forests and sponge gardens.
The 260km of coastline around the Mornington Peninsula and the Port Phillip Heads Marine National Park offer you almost limitless opportunities to explore thousnds of little underwater villages where more than 500 species and 1000 species of marine plants are at home.

For novice divers, the Octopuses’ Garden at Rye Pier is a very rewarding place to start. THis 200m long trail follows the pier, with big underwater signs pointing out some of the more unusual inhabitants. There’s a huge variety of sponges, fish, sea stars and rays – and watch out for the elusive pipefish, shy pygmy seahorses hiding in the seaweed and octopuses lurking in the sand.
Dive Victoria chartered Boat dives go to a number of prime locations including the Portsea Hole and Port Phillip Heads. Both have vertical walls whose extravagant marine decorations and diverse communities put them amongst Australia’s to wall dive locations. THe Pope’s Eye, an artificial reef which was built in the 1880’s has luxuriant marine life and is suited to less experienced divers.
